God of Riffs PS VR2 review: A chaotic metal‑powered rhythm VR game with great music, fun skull‑smashing gameplay, some jank, and simple visuals.

God of Riffs is a great example of one of the best things about VR: developers making the game they want to make, not the one a publisher tells them to. This is one of those rare projects that feels completely unfiltered—it’s weird, wicked, and will leave most players thinking: what in the metalverse did I just play?

This Ain’t No Pop Music Game…

At its core, God of Riffs is a musical game in the vein of Guitar Hero, but instead of colored notes and puny pop music, you’re treated to heavy rock while slaying skeletons. You bash, slice, and swat skeletal enemies with your axes, all while headbanging and flailing your entire body like you’re trying to compensate for everything missing in your life. And honestly? It feels surprisingly natural.

The story mode is pretty short—it took me less than an hour to blast through it with an S rank—but like most music games, that’s only part of the experience. The arcade mode adds much more longevity, with unlockable songs, modifiers, and challenges that significantly extend the game’s lifespan.

I had an absolute blast. Smashing skeleton skulls in rhythm just works. That said, the game isn’t without its flaws. The biggest issue is jank. Even when I knew I hit enemies correctly, the game sometimes disagreed—and that drove me mad. Jank makes me furious, even if it only happens once per song.

Presentation And Price Point Disparencies…

Visually, the game is serviceable but nothing special. The graphics and overall presentation won’t blow your mind, and that’s a shame, because it might cause some players to overlook an otherwise very fun experience.

Pricing is another sore point. While the game is listed at around $15 in many countries, it’s a gobsmacking $22 here—and at that price, it’s hard to recommend without hesitation.

Still, there’s a lot to like: hellishly good music, plenty of replay value thanks to the arcade mode and trophy list (including a platinum), and solid performance with no signs of reprojection.

The Verdict…

GodofriffNot perfect—but if heavy riffs, VR, and skull-smashing sound like your thing, God of Riffs is worth a look.

Some jank. A lot of fun. Great music. Mediocre visuals.

Oh, and one more thing, I have been waiting for something like this since Rock of the Dead on PS3, not really the same but it somewhat filled a gap for me.

  1. It’s great to hear that the game has so much personality! The combination of metal music and VR combat really sounds like it brings something new to the rhythm genre. How responsive did the combat feel, especially when you’re headbanging and swinging those axes?

    1. Mostly a figure of speech, but you will most definitly headbang or whatever while axing all those skeletons, and that with 1 to1 responsiveness thanks to the precision of the PSVR2 hardware.
