Did you know that PlayStation once released an exclusive range of cardboard slipcases for some of its Only On PlayStationtitles?
If not, don’t worry—you are far from alone. This collection of ten alternative covers was only available through selected GAME stores in the United Kingdom for a very limited period. Yes, you read that correctly: In the UK only. They were never officially released anywhere else, which seems like a very strange decision in hindsight.
To be fair, I probably wouldn’t have cared much if they had been cheap-looking or poorly made. Thankfully, that isn’t the case at all. These slipcases are absolutely stunning, both in terms of design and overall quality. The artwork is beautifully minimalist, the print quality is excellent, and they stand out as some of the nicest PlayStation promotional items I’ve come across.
The Front, Artsy, Minimalistic…
Just look at those fantastic covers. The colours are vibrant, the artwork is clean and stylish, and while this minimalist approach might not appeal to everyone, I absolutely love them.
What makes them even cooler is that these aren’t replacement covers. Instead, they are slipcases designed to slide over the original PlayStation 4 game cases, allowing you to keep the standard release intact while giving your collection a completely different look on the shelf.
As a collector, I simply couldn’t resist. In fact, I ended up buying all ten games again just so I could have the complete slipcase set. Yes, that means I now own two copies of every single game in the collection. Completely unnecessary? Probably. Worth it? Absolutely.
The Backside Of These Slipcases…
Talk about going all-in on the minimalist design. To be honest, this is my only complaint about the entire set.
While the front covers look absolutely fantastic, I really wish Sony had given the back covers the same treatment. Instead of creating stylish alternative versions of the original backsides, they opted for an ultra-minimal design that removes almost all of the useful information.
As a result, whenever I want to check the game’s details, screenshots, or feature list, I have to pull the case out of the slipcover and look at the original packaging underneath. It is a small annoyance, but one that quickly becomes noticeable when browsing the collection.
What makes this even stranger is that the fronts and spines feel incredibly premium. The print quality, colours, and overall presentation are excellent, yet the backsides feel like an afterthought. It creates a weird contrast where one side screams “collector’s item” while the other feels surprisingly cheap and unfinished.
Absolutely Gorgeous…
Here you can see the spine artwork, and it is quite interesting to study the different design choices Sony made across the collection. Some logos use bold typefaces, others use thinner lettering, while a few feature additional artwork and graphical flourishes as part of the logo itself.
Despite these differences, the overall presentation remains remarkably consistent. Everything is perfectly aligned, the colour palette is cohesive, and the slipcases sit beautifully together on the shelf. The result is a collection that feels both varied and unified at the same time.
It is one of those rare cases where every item has its own identity, yet the complete set still looks like it belongs together. For collectors, that kind of attention to detail is always appreciated.
Ten Centerpieces…
Ten games, ten fantastic games. While we now know that several of them eventually made their way to PC, that doesn’t take away from how cool this collection really is. Ironically, Sony could have produced well over a hundred of these slipcases and probably gotten away with it. Games like Patapon, Everybody’s Golf, Rush of Blood, Farpoint, LocoRoco, and Gravity Rush are just a few examples of titles that I would happily have bought a second copy of just to own more of these awesome-looking slipcases.
The reason I’m writing about these slipcases now is because I’ve been digging through the mountain of unfinished drafts on the blog. This article, for example, was originally started and was nearly complete back in 2022.
And yes, there are probably well over a hundred draft articles sitting there in various states of completion. For one reason or another—writer’s block, my PSVR-only phase, my Amiga-only phase, or simply getting distracted—they were never quite finished or published.
