Jimmy White's 'Whirlwind' Snooker (Virgin Games, 1991, Amiga)_1

“Without doubt, this is a seriously good simulation, but not devoid of humor. If you are taking too long, the snooker balls themselves develop faces and grin, grimace and stick out their tongues. And for those who want to show off their skills, there are numbers of trick shots with which to impress friends and perhaps yourself. Action, strategy, and excellent fun. Jimmy White’s Whirlwind Snooker has it all. It sets new standards in excellence.”

With these words, CU Amiga magazine celebrated, in July 1991, this fantastic pool game that, despite its 30 years, still has something to say. This article was actually supposed to be published at the end of last month but duty matters kept me away from blogging. Yet, I couldn’t let this title go and so it is, once again inspired by Martin Grundy’s calendars.

The title was awarded with a well-deserved 90% and with a Screen Star, due to its 3D appearance, its realistic physics and, most of all, the simple and intuitive GUI. Despite its simplicity though, the available tricks made this game a long-lasting one, still remembered nowadays.

Right now the weather out there is just way too hot to be involved in outdoor activities. So what about a nice match at Jimmy White’s Whirlwind Snooker?
