The Amiga Community Rulez…

TerribleFire CD32 Thingiverse PrintFrom time to time, you’ll come across posts on social media that introduce you to interesting products or projects. This is one of the best parts of being involved in the Amiga community—there’s always something new to learn. Many times, people spend hours working on improvements or fixes, often for free. I’ve received several items that I would have gladly paid for, as a way to show my appreciation for their time and effort.

This Thingiverse item is something I’ve been searching for ever since I first acquired the TerribleFire card several years ago. It’s the perfect addition that I’ve wanted for a long time.

I stumbled upon a post in the quiet Amiga CD32 Facebook group about a 3D-printed Kipper2k V6 cover. Although the group isn’t very active, sometimes less frequent posts lead to valuable finds. After seeing Jonas’s post, I knew I had to ask my friend Tindis (thanks again!) for another favour—this time to 3D print the item for me.

He responded quickly with a, I’ll give it a go and then…utter silence… until I got this video in my message box.

Some of you might be wondering what a TerribleFire card is for the Amiga CD32. It’s an accelerator and expansion card offering several variants with 68020 to 68060 processors. It includes 64MB or 128MB of Fast RAM, a 2.5″ IDE interface for hard drives or CF/SD cards, and some models have a PS/2 keyboard connector. Want one for your Amiga 500, 1200, or another model? No worries, those versions exist as well. More information is available here.

The Printing In Action…

3D Printing

Test printing is underway, and while some purists might argue about the color choice, I personally like the red version. Tindis kindly offered to print a darker one as well, but I politely declined. The entire setup, printing, and “settling” process took around five hours. Though I have little experience with 3D printing, this seemed like quite a bit of time for such a print, but I suppose the details and the drying process of the plastic play a role.

How Does It Actually Look Then?

As expected, I was a bit sceptical about how this item would fit and whether it was designed correctly for my specific Kipper2k model. However, the card slotted perfectly into the cover, with both the keyboard and RGB connectors aligning as they should. Even the bolt hole for the M3 screw was spot-on. Despite some potential tight fits due to shielding around the expansion port, the cover fit perfectly. The only minor issue was with the thicker RGB cable from Commodore, but a small adjustment allowed my larger cable to fit without a problem.

I am sure this cover can be optimized more and whatnot, but the way it does not fit my usage perfectly and I am overly happy with it and this is why I even decided to blog about it (to show my gratitude towards both Maciej and Tindis for their efforts).
